Dunno. Waino' didn't exactly plunk Kemp. More suggestive was Wainwright drilling Ramirez in Milwaukee the day after Holliday got smoked above the knee. Saw no complaints from rival bench either time. There is typically some sort of brushback/HBP when one of the big flies gets drilled. You might note that none of the payback was above the waist. -

From a practical standpoint, he probably is untouchable. The only deal Miller would have been placed in would have brought big-time starting pitching in return. The Cards don't appear in the deep end of that pool. MIller has also pitched well his last two outings. His availability was partly dictated by performance. The Cardinals were never seeking to trade him. They were willing to listen. Big difference. -

The Tsunami is on furlough next Wednesday. So you'll have to do without JSL!!! for two weeks. That said, I do anticipate a complementary move this weekend or Monday. I'm thinking relief. Jonathan Broxton's name is a popular one. He could fill a number of roles for the Cardinals, much like K-Rod did for the Brewers last season. Boggs and Motte have been very good. Salas is improving. I'm unsure how long the Cards want to retain an alignment of 3 LH relievers. Broxton makes sense. He's just an example of what the club is looking for. -
Wainwright seemed to have a fire to him last night that the team has lacked for a while. That along with his comments about how the team should be "20 games over .500" come across as a guy who has seen enough of the lethargic play. Do you see him taking on more of a leadership role and putting the team on his back similar to how Carpenter did late last season? -
That was a step-up performance in a number of ways. Waino' knew who he was facing in his next start when he made his rather bold statement to the Post-DIspatch last Friday. To shoulder that kind of responsibility, then deliver, makes a powerful statement. Kudos to you for paying attention. Waino' said what needed to be said. Then he performed as the team needed him to perform. Leadership? Big time. -
The anniversary of the Raz' trade is Friday. A year ago folks were accusing Mo' of front office malfeasance one day then wanting to put him on the next Amtrak out of town the afternoon of the Rasmus trade. He couldn't win. Except win the team did indeed win. This team's needs are less severe. I'd lay off Mo' for now. A lot will happen between now and next Tuesday. -

The Cardinals have never been sellers at the deadline under current ownership. I don't see that happening this year. The club isn't distressed financially. They're defending world champions and have invested more than $116M in payroll. The team is competitive. It should be better but has shown recent signs of a run. My vibe is they remain in it to win it. -

I've been very impressed since catching his act during spring training. Rosenthal has a mature mental approach in addition to obvious talent. There's a reason a guy like him skips leagues twice within six months. There are those who project him as a late-inning reliever -- to some, the same projection accompanies Carlos Martinez. However, I believe Rosenthal, like Martinez, will get a chance to succeed in a Triple-A or even the major-league rotation before he lands in the bullpen. -
I've heard rumblings on James Shields and Farnsworth, Have you? James Shields is under team control for a couple more years, and Farnsworth is lights out, is there a move like this on the horizon? This would be awesome for the cards who knows what could get it done though -
The Cards have long had interest in Rays pitching. Mo' tried to strike a deal with Tampa Bay involving Rasmus in 2010. Shields is an innings monster, precisely what the Cardinals seek with young pitching approaching. Mo' continues to send signals that he isn't looking for rotation help. Of course, it wouldn't be the first time the Cardinals ran counter to public statements only to explain the contradiction as a reaction to the marketplace. -
The long term price for Wainwright, Freeze, and Craig keeps going up. When Berkman comes off the books in Nov will the Cards make a move to sign both to long term deals (a year early for Wainwright and two years early for the others) or will they wait unitl Beltran and Furcal come off the books the following year? -
I would anticipate dialogue with Wainwright. Should Freese finish the schedule productive and healthy, there could be converstation there as well. With Craig a year shy of arbitration, any long-term deal with him seems a bit hasty. Additionally, If I'm Craig, I would prefer to negotiate after a year of 550 at-bats rather than after a season truncated by injury. -

Joe: Once again, thanks for the chats. Like many Cardinal fans it appears obvious that this team needs to improve it's bench, particularly from the right side. Last night's game was a good example. When Berkman went down, Matheny selects LH Carpenter to play first against a premier LHP. Sure it worked, as Waino outpitched Kershaw and the Cardinals hung eight on him. Having a RH contact hitting option sure would be nice. -

With the new draft pick compensation rules,it seems the dynamic of the baseball
trade
deadline has shifted. Before, teams gambled
more on big name players who were free-agents-
to-be while giving up multiple big name
prospects, because they had a safety net in
the next draft if the player walked. With
the net gone, what do you think is the most
likely new medium for trades: teams trading
big name players for lesser prospects, or
trading big name players who are under
contract for multiple years to get the
big name prospects? -
It does appear probable that blockbusters now must be predictated on players having significant term remaining. Salary dumps may now become more in vogue. Rentals are trickier with the modified compensation rules. It's one element that never made sense for the Cardinals re: Hamels. To sacrifice the kind of talent needed to acquire an elite pending free agent pitcher now seems confiscatory without the safety net of draft compensation. Give the Cardinals credit. They rarely act rashly. They have numerous huge contracts but aren't locked in for six or seven years. Holliday is the exception. Yes, Yadi accepted a five-year deal. But the Cardinals retain significant flexibility for a $110M-$120M payroll. -

What is the future of Jon Jay. Jay seems to be a true professional. He runs balls down well in centerfield and usually takes very good at bats. With the arrival of Taveras on the way, will Jay be looked at as trade bait? With salary increases of Wainwright, Molina, and others on the way, and outfield of Holliday, Jay, Taveras would make some sense in 2014 I would think. -
Very good question. There is actually growing internal support for putting Taveras on the table as an option for Aug/Sept THIS season if the club continues to struggle offensively. The Berkman injury is another development that may factor. Playing Carlos Beltran in CF against LHP is not a preferrable option. As Jay nears arbitration, the questions become mor difficult. He is a plus CF. He is a career .300 hitter. This team requires a fly-catcher in CF given that Holliday does not possess plus range and Beltran plays on fragile knees. The Cardinals may be intrigued if they could find someone who could fill a CF/Leadoff capacity. -

Good Day Joe - The Cardinals current run differential (+90) exceeds that of the entire 2011 championship season (+70) and suggests a dominance that has yet to be realized where it really counts. Is 7th inning bullpen hijinks all that separates this team from being an October monster again? Thanks and stay cool! -

-
CF/leadoff capacity...especially from right side...hmmm...after the big Hamels deal, do you think the Cards would be interested in Victorino and would they be able to land him as a rental? He's a drastically different hitter from the right side this year than he has been from the left. Of course, Jay's stats against LH pitching make the situation...confusing? -

Been a lot of hand-wringing lately about the decline of Furcal's bat over the first couple months of the season. What he's doing now is more in line with what he's done the last couple of years. He is what he is at this stage of the season. Perhaps the BFIB should just be content with a wonderful defensive shortstop with a so-so bat who bats 7th or 8th. Your thoughts? -
That would be fine if the Cards had a ready alternative as leadoff hitter. They don't. For this offense to go, Furcal has to be offer consistently quality at-bats. He was terrific at working counts early in the season. He also drove the ball more. The Cardinals approach their 100th game and Furcal has missed only eight stats. That's a pretty heavy load for a guy considered a health question with a capital Q in spring training. To compensate, Matheny has minimized the running demands on Raffy. But this is a long, very hot summer. They can't break him. -
